A root canal is a procedure for preserving a tooth that has become severely infected or damaged. A root canal makes it possible to avoid having the tooth extracted. The affected tooth is made stronger so that it can perform regular biting and chewing functions again. If you have extreme pain or sensitivity in a tooth, you may need a root canal from Gentle Dental Care here in Mount Prospect. Read on to learn more.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure for restoring a severely damaged or infected tooth rather than pulling it out. A root canal is performed when the soft pulp material at the center of a tooth becomes infected or damaged. In many cases, the infection or damage extends down into the root of the tooth. In the case of infection, performing a root canal is necessary to stop the infection from spreading beyond the tooth.

The root canal procedure is performed in a manner similar to treating a cavity. A primary difference is that treatment is needed deep inside the tooth with a root canal, whereas cavities affect teeth near the surface. During a root canal, damaged or infected pulp is removed from the center of the tooth and the canals of the root. The interior of the tooth and root is then cleaned out. Finally, the tooth and root are filled and sealed with a dental filling.

Following the root canal procedure, a dental crown might also be placed over the tooth to further strengthen and protect it. Either way, the tooth will be strong enough to bite and chew food again without pain or sensitivity.
